This pair of earrings, named First Snow, transports us to an untouched Scottish wilderness, where ancient forests once reigned supreme. Perfect in their asymmetry, each dome of bog oak has been meticulously carved to reveal an intimate portrait of two snow-dusted Scots Pines.
These pieces tell a story spanning millennia, honouring Scotland’s profound natural heritage. The featured Scots Pine, among the nation’s most ancient indigenous trees, having first taken root circa 7000 BC following the Late Glacial period, is carved from bog oak recovered from the Hemplands Haul, where approximately thirty sub-fossilised oaks emerged from Norfolk’s Wissington fens, binding past to present.
Hand-painted shell gold illuminates the scene, capturing the increasingly rare spectacle of snow resting heavy on pine boughs. This poignant detail speaks to both loss and hope, while winter snows grow scarcer, the Scots Pine stands as a symbol of resilience, renowned for its ability to thrive in dry conditions, offering a glimpse of nature’s adaptive strength in an uncertain future.
Each exquisite dome rests within a black ruthenium-plated silver frame, embraced by brilliant-cut diamonds. These precious stones encircle the scene and cluster at the base like freshly fallen snow, while a brilliant-cut diamond creates a sparkling bridge to the shepherd’s hook fastening. Together, these elements compose a wearable meditation on wilderness, both its enduring beauty and its precious fragility.
