Forest Cathedral

Bas-relief sculpture
Bog Oak, circa 4,800 years old
163cm x 90cm x 10cm

Forest Cathedral evokes the physical impact Natasha Wightman experienced when first encountering bog oak; a feeling of being in the presence of prehistory.

Carved from sub-fossilised remnants of neolithic oak, the bas-relief sculpture depicts a scene of our ancient indigenous rainforests, thousands of years ago. These very oaks once stood as towering sentinels, often reaching beyond 50 meters. Working with a master carver, Wightman reminds us of these huge giants that once inhabited our lands.

Forest Cathedral envelops the observer, interrogating the relationship that we have with the natural world. This work stands as a memorial, a celebration and a reminder of our powerful yet fragile natural heritage.
